Mad Girl Rising

Both at Once

A Tauran

Encouraging Unity.

A conversation with myself for now. A stab at privacy of thought. An experiment in keeping things to myself. A search for an inner thought, a centered opinion. An attempt to heal.

You say I've changed... I disagree... the map has changed... and with it... me. - Tiny Tim

And now open for consideration and resonance.

Ego has a particular scent. It makes me retch. When I’m in a room full of Narcissists I can barely swallow. I think if I had to attend the Academy Awards or the Grammy’s I would be dehydrated from unstoppable vomiting in the aisle. And yes, I have an Ego too. I make myself sick too sometimes.

For those arguing that the things Tucker Max says are not taken to heart by Hopkins students, I offer this: protestors on campus were frequently met with misogynistic slurs, and occasional quotes from Tucker Max himself. They were referred to as “cunts,” “fat bitches,” “cum dumpsters” (which is a Tucker Max quote), and my personal favorite, “lesbian cunt nuggets.” This was not a constructive and educational debate – it was nothing more than an unfortunate event that made it clear that misogyny persists on the Hopkins campus.

Radar Redux » Johns Hopkins Speaker Causes Campus Controversy

All I need to know that misogyny still exists in Johns Hopkins is to listen to what the men say, nay, shout at the women during the parties that happen all over my block and every weekend. It’s hard not to believe that a date rape happens every night.

Unfortunately, most of the administration has missed the point of the protest. By embracing the response to Tucker Max as a positive controversy, the university is congratulating itself for offending and threatening the women who are a part of it. The administration has eliminated any opportunity for real dissent from students and faculty by claiming that the entire situation was a learning experience. No one learned anything constructive; students who enjoy Tucker Max were unaffected, and those who stood opposed to him simply learned that our concerns are insignificant to the administration.

Radar Redux » Johns Hopkins Speaker Causes Campus Controversy

This kinda thing was a constant occurence at Earlham. Earlham is a pretty left-leaning school and while I was there the administration went through this thing where they wanted to bring speakers that represented the other side of the debate. Who did they bring? Ann Coulter. Hard right attention getters with more interest in making the other side look bad then in getting any sort of message across. And it worked. The students would go batshit. Makes asses of themselves. It sounds like the Hopkins students who were in opposition did a bit better. But sad that college administrations still think that controversy for controversy’s sake is still a worthwhile academic activity. Put that on the list of my problems with academia.

The Baltimore City Council went where no local government has gone before, it seems, in telling crisis pregnancy centers in the city this week that they have to put up signs saying they don’t provide abortion or birth control.

I’m catching up on the news a bit, and just ran into this one in Slate…
